Charity Work rewarding for Karingal participants
10 June 2011
Karingal participants are making everything from baby’s bonnets, to jumpers and toys in aid of five different charities as part of their day programs at Participate.
The program started three years ago when the ladies got together to enjoy arts and crafts – but over the last 12 months, their creations including knitting and their skills in sorting second hand clothes have become helpful for various charitable organisations.
Pauline Butler, who runs the program, said participants help mothers in East Timor by packaging maternal packs, sort second hand clothes ready for people in need as well as supply shoe boxes of Christmas toys for children in Papua New Guinea.
“Everyone has taken on the tasks with great enthusiasm,” Pauline said.
“Since we have started doing this we have almost doubled the amount of charities we are doing work for, which is fantastic.
"This group has been really great for everyone’s confidence and has been a great bridge into the community.”
Pauline said the group has received plenty of support from all levels of Karingal to ensure they can keep doing their good work.
Can you help? Donations of 12-ply wool are needed to keep knitting jumpers and bonnets. If you would like to make a donation, contact Participate on 5222 2323 to make arrangements.
