Expo helps colour clients world

11 August 2009

A July art exhibition featuring work by Karingal Mental Health Support clients provided an opportunity for artists to showcase their work, build confidence and re-connect with the community.

The inaugural expo displayed the work of seven artists, in a range of mediums including painting, drawing, ceramics, mosaic and scrapbooking.

The artists are all participants in Karingal Mental Health Support art and craft programs.

Mental Health Support Outreach and Respite Team Leader, Sam DeAngelis, said 27 year-old Joanne Ferguson was one artist who was successful in selling her art work at the expo opening on July 13.

It was the first piece of art work Joanne had ever sold and boosted her confidence and self-esteem immeasurably, Sam said.

About 50 people attended the official opening of the exhibition at Alcoa in Geelong, with many commenting on the quality of the art work displayed.

According to Mental Health Support Team Leader, Jill Reid, one of the highlights of the exhibition was the Mosaic de Toilet; a piece completed by a group of artists out of an old toilet and mosaic tiles.

One of the strengths of the Karingal Mental Health Support art program was its accessibility to people of all abilities and the fact it helped build participants’ confidence, Jill said.

“I’ve seen great improvements in the mental health of the participants,’’ she said.

“People with mental illness often have feelings of isolation and the art program has helped connect these people with their community again.’’
