Garden brings Warrnambool community together
15 February 2011
After many years of planning, the Warrnambool Shared Garden Project has finally come to fruition, and Karingal has secured its very own spot.
The project started as an idea in late 2005 with the purpose of creating a gathering place where members of the whole community could meet, grow food, share knowledge and learn and practice sustainable living.
Finally, in March last year, community members were invited to purchase a membership for a nominal fee and 4 X 4 metre plots were made available to lease. These two acres of unused land have now been turned into a productive suburban oasis.
Since then Karingal’s South West Support branch has leased two plots and a steering committee made up of clients and staff was formed to develop plans for a garden with good access for people with disabilities.
After much hard work, digging, shifting of soil and mulching, the garden was ready to be planted and enjoyed.
Clients from across South West Support’s day activities, individual support and respite clients have all contributed to the planting and maintenance of the garden.
The Karingal Shared Garden Project has not only provided an opportunity for clients to grow and share their own food but also to meet new people and be part of the garden community.
