Kommercial think green to create cash saver

19 April 2010

The staff and crew at Kommercial’s Alcoa Enclave work unit have come up with a great way to help Alcoa save both money and the environment.

Making vehicle log books and shredding documents are among the jobs assigned to Kommercial at the Point Henry smelter.

However, the cluey staff at the enclave realised there was a lot of waste from the shredding that could easily be reused such as clips, binding spirals, clear plastic sheets and card.

So, they started saving these items instead of throwing them out.

The clips are now returned to administration while the rest is cut down and used for binding the vehicle log books, effectively eliminating the need to purchase these items separately.

“We make around 500 log books a year and what we recover from the shredding almost covers everything we need for the binding which is a great saving for Alcoa” Enclave Supervisor Jill Futcher said.

Alcoa Point Henry Smelter Manager Stewart Esdale said he was impressed by the initiative.

“During the past 12 months, our employees have been involved in cost reduction initiatives and activities to manage the impacts of the global financial crisis on our business,” he said.

“We commend the Kommercial team for working with us to ensure the sustainability of our organisation."

Kommercial’s Enclave work unit has been located in the Stores area of Alcoa’s Point Henry Smelter for over 16 years doing a variety of jobs including managing all postal requirements, induction administration and minor component work.
