Melaluka - A new Karingal building project
14 November 2011
Melaluka - a planned $1.5m Karingal building project - will provide 2500 annual nights respite accommodation for up to 300 individuals from across Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula with multiple sclerosis or other disability when it is completed in late 2012.
Karingal has acquired a property in Melaluka Road Leopold. Plans are underway for a five bedroom extension and refurbishment of the current two bedroom dwelling.
For the first time in Karingal’s almost 60-year history, the Geelong community is being asked to help realise the Melaluka project.
“There is a significant unmet demand for residential respite and day support accommodation in the Geelong region,” said Karingal CEO Daryl Starkey. “Respite gives individuals and their families an often critically needed break from their duties as a carer.”
“We are hoping people get behind this community project, either through a financial donation or through support with building materials, goods and even trade services,” said Mr Starkey.
Individuals who would like to give to this worthwhile cause can donate on-line by simply going to the Karingal website www.karingal.org.au or by post to Karingal PO Box 558 Belmont 3216.
