Pivotal day for NDIS

17 August 2011

Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced on August 10 that the Government shares the vision for a National Disability Insurance Scheme and will begin laying the  foundations for its introduction.
They also released the final report by the Productivity Commission into the NDIS.

The Productivity Commission’s report found that it would take at least seven years to transform disability services.

“The Australian Government supports the Productivity Commission’s vision for a system that provides individuals with the support they need over the course of their lifetime, and wants reform of disability services that is financially sustainable,” the announcement said.

More than 40,000 people have now signed up to the Every Australian Counts Campaign in support of a National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Karingal is a major supporter of the campaign with a number of events initiated by the organisation over the past few months, that have been very well supported.

Jacqui Pierce, Karingal NDIS co-ordinator, spoke at various events including the South West Carer and Respite Services Network in Warrnambool and to the GRAND network in Geelong.

The Geelong region All Abilities Netball Competition participants enjoyed playing their Friday night matches on July 1 wearing the red Every Australian Counts Campaign t-shirts at Kardinia Netball Courts. Participants and their family members had attended an information night about the campaign prior to the match, and have been busy signing up supporters through their networks.

Konnections staff provided Frankston shoppers with the opportunity to learn about the campaign at their information stand at the Frankston Bayside Shopping Centre in June.

Campaigners braved the cold on June 29 at Geelong railway stations to let the public know about this important proposal and how it will revolutionise disability services.

Over the next 12 weeks Karingal has several key events planned for the campaign.
