Skates are on for Amundsen Street

19 April 2010

The girls from Geelong Roller Derby have shown their support for Karingal’s Amundsen Street project with the generous donation of $500.

The project is being built in Belmont and will see the development of a Karingal supported accommodation residence for young people with high-care needs.

However, as an interim option, Karingal has modified Barwon Health’s John Robb House so that young people like Nicole Jones, who was previously living in an aged care facility, can stay in the best accommodation possible while the state-of-the-art residence is being built.

Roller derby team members Sarah Agterhuis, known on rink as Riff Raff Saff invited Nicole to their first bout in February and said she enjoyed it a lot.

Fellow skater Joanne Stokoe, aka Nitro Nutter, said any money raised from each bout is donated to a charity or community group of their choice.

“We are really happy to donate to the Amunsden Street project. I know how much Nicole is looking forward to moving in, so we just hope this donation helps a little.”

Nicole said while she is enjoying living in John Robb House, she can’t wait for her permanent home to be built.

“It will be really great,” she said.
