Still full of love after 70 years
13 October 2009
Karalee residents Bert and Vera Hutchinson agree the key to their long marriage has been to give each other space.
“She didn’t interfere with me going fishing and I didn’t interfere with her going to church,’’ Bert explained as the couple prepared to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on September 30.
Vera laughed when Diversional Therapist Sharon Hecker asked her how she had managed to “put up with Bert all these years”.
“I learnt how to say ‘yes, dear,’’ she giggles.
“We’ve had a good time together.’’
Vera, 89, has been at Karalee for two years, moving when her dementia made it too difficult to say at home.
Bert, 92, followed 12 months later.
He said he was relieved to be back together with Vera and enjoyed just sitting with her and having a chat.
