Work education opens doors for students

14 November 2011

In September, State Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney visited the Karingal Training Work Education program in Norlane to speak with the students about her career and pathway to politics, as well as listen to some of the students present their ‘Vision Boards’: a plan to reach their personal goals.

The Certificate I in Work Education is a course of study which prepares students for the workplace. Participants in the course are all clients of MatchWorks in the Geelong region, and many have faced significant disadvantages.

In the informal session, Ms Tierney, as well as Julie Graham, Karingal General Manager of Strategic Development and Michael Wasley, MatchWorks General Manager, were able to chat openly about their journey to employment, provide advice on ‘starting out’, and also answer questions from the keen participants.

The course assists people to gain important life and workplace skills, including workplace expectations, budgeting their finances and presentation skills. According to Cindy, a participant in the course, the Certificate I in Work Education has helped her to have a “mind change’. Similarly, Wilma, also a participant, said that the course was “the best thing she’d ever done” and that her Vision Board had pride-of-place next to the TV in her home.
