Brain Injury Awareness Week Expo in Geelong

04 August 2010

ARCsupport, a branch of Geelong-based disability services provider Karingal, will be hosting a free expo providing information about services and supports for individuals with a brain injury on Monday August 16.

The expo will be held at the State Government Offices on the corner of Fenwick and Little Malop Streets, Geelong from 9am – 4pm. The event is part of Brain Injury Awareness Week, which runs from August 16 – 22.

An Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is an injury to the brain that has occurred after birth as a result of accident, trauma, stroke, brain infection, alcohol or drug abuse or by disease to the brain. Over 500,000 Australians have an Acquired Brain Injury, which equates to approximately 1 in 45 people. As many as two out of three of these people acquired their brain injury before the age of 25, and three out of four people with an acquired brain injury are men.

The theme of the 2010 week is ‘Falls related traumatic brain injury’. The week will also feature the Brain Injury Prevention Program in schools throughout the Geelong region.

Keynote speaker at this program is 28-year-old Grayden Moore, former Australian top ten tennis player and doubles partner of Samantha Stosur, who fell from his skateboard in 2004 and sustained a catastrophic brain injury.

ARCsupport Manager Jacqui Pierce said it wasn’t only the injured person who faced challenges but also their families, friends and carers.

“This expo will be a one-stop-shop for anyone seeking information about anything brain-injury - from employment services to respite,” she said. “I strongly encourage anyone who may have a brain injury, or know someone with a brain injury, to pop in sometime during the day.”
