Volunteers come together for Big Day Out

This year's Wyndham Workplace Big Day Out is set to be bigger than ever with around 70 participants from Mambourin, Warringa Park Primary School and Karingal St Laurence taking part in the fun-filled event to be held this Wednesday August 16 at Eagle Stadium in Werribee.

Art adorns community centre walls

A variety of outstanding photos, sculptures, drawings and paintings created by people with a disability will be showcased as part of this year's Karingal St Laurence KarnivART '17 Wyndham art exhibition from this Wednesday 26 July at Wyndham Park Community Centre.

Roll up! Roll up! The Women’s Circus joins the Big Day Out

Trainers from the renowned Women's Circus will join 100 employees from Geelong's business community as they take a break from their usual employment to support 60 people with disability at the Karingal St Laurence Winter Workplace Big Day Out on Thursday June 29.

From the CEO - Karingal St Laurence merger update

The merger of Karingal and St Laurence continues to be a key focus for both organisations.  Officially we anticipate that Karingal St Laurence will become a legal entity by March 31, however integration processes and projects will continue during the year.

Joint working teams are edging closer to finishing multiple transition processes, and during the first half of this year we will start to see Karingal St Laurence become a more integrated and single organisation.  Major integration projects that should be completed by June 2017 include aged care, disability and employment services.

Merger Mingle brings teams together

More than 200 Karingal and St Laurence staff came together to learn more about each other at the KSL Merger Mingle, held Thursday December 1 at Eastern Hub.  The mingle featured stalls with people offering information about all the different services Karingal and St Laurence provide, while the crowd enjoyed getting to know one another over a drink and nibbles.

Joel realises employment goals

A struggle with language, literacy and numeracy was an open problem for Joel when he first walked through the doors of Karingal Training Sunshine, but he was determined to explore new work opportunities through education.

With the help of a dedicated Karingal Training trainer, Genevieve, he completed two job ready qualifications and a work placement and is now happily working for Home Instead Senior Care.

Local achievers celebrated for ability

Six outstanding achievers were celebrated for their contributions to the community at the Geelong Awards for People with a Disability ceremony last month at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre.

This year's honours went to Simone Stevens for Volunteering, Annaliese Bishop for Sports and Recreation, Nicci Wall for Leadership and Advocacy, Ryan Schmidtke for Achievement, and Michael Chan for Arts, while the Young Achiever award was presented to Chloe Hayden.

Adventure day out

After a day spent paddling boats, playing cricket and perfecting his bocce throw, Karingal participant Marcus Lovell always leaves Karingal's annual Summer Workplace Big Day Out with a smile on his face and a story to tell, and this year was no different.

The event, held Thursday November 24 at Adventure Park in Wallington, was bigger than ever, with nearly 90 workplace volunteers from prominent local Geelong businesses supporting more than 120 participants from Karingal, St Laurence and Encompass.

Something new is coming

In the coming months Karingal St Laurence will welcome a new bi-annual magazine.

The new publication will tell the stories of the people at the heart of Karingal St Laurence as well as keep you up to date with what is happening across the organisation.  It will replace the existingKaringal News.

For years Karingal Newshas been a great way to communicate the happenings of Karingal and now, as Karingal and St Laurence come together, we look forward to continuing to keep you updated through the magazine.

Clients and carers soak up soccer experience

More than 90 Karingal and St Laurence clients and carers travelled to Melbourne's AAMI Park on Saturday December 1 to see Melbourne City Football Club's clash against Brisbane Roar.

MatchWorks organised tickets and transport for clients and carers from Geelong, Warrnambool, Colac, Wyndham, Frankston and Rosebud, while Geelong's All Abilities soccer team was one of six teams participating in half-time games.

MatchWorks also hosted a Chairman's function for 30 guests, including Pararoos vice-captain Chris Pyne.  Chris last year captained New South Wales to victory at the National Paralympic Football Championships and spoke to fans before the game.  Everyone involved enjoyed a great night of soccer action.

Garden fresh

The meals prepared in cooking programs operating from the Eastern Hub have never been fresher now ingredients are being harvested straight from the new on-site community 'food forest'.

GMHBA workplace volunteers worked alongside Karingal participants to plant a variety of stone fruits, berries, apples and lemons, along with different herbs.

New look sports club

More than 10 job seekers spent six months renovating the North Shore Sports and Community Club as part of a Work for the Dole coordinator project.

Participants were involved in bathroom renovations, re-carpeting, painting, repairing fixtures, restoring seating, and constructing new storage areas and signage for the club house.

Karingal St Laurence Big Night Out

The Karingal St Laurence Big Night Out, held late 2016, was a wonderful success with over 500 people attending.

The night is the region's only fully inclusive annual gala event and sees local Geelong business representatives, people with a disability, community groups, and Karingal St Laurence staff, family and friends come together for a night of music and dancing.

Karingal celebrated International Day of People with Disability with a variety of events across the state.

Officially opened by Cr Sandra Mayer, and Karingal client Martin Dobson, the Great South East Bowl Off began in Frankston as part of the occasion.
